Strong 8K on Windows and macOS, start to finish
A keyboard turns a catalogue this size from something you scroll through into something you search. It is also the fastest way to establish whether a set of credentials is sound.
Have these to hand
- A laptop or desktop, Windows or macOS, on the same internet connection you watch from
- Your Strong 8K server address, username and password
- Four minutes, and an HDMI cable if the screen you want is the television
Install a desktop player
On Windows the Strong 8K build is published as a Microsoft Store listing, which installs and updates like any other store application; the apps page shows whichever Windows entry the catalogue currently holds. On macOS, use any desktop player that supports Xtream Codes; several free ones do the job and none of them needs special privileges. The subscription does not care which one you pick.
Add the account
Open the player and add a new Xtream account with the server address, the username and the password from your account page. Typing them with a keyboard removes the single most common source of failure on the other platforms, which is a capital letter missed on a remote control. Paste them if you can, rather than retyping.
Use it as the reference device
Once the catalogue loads here, this machine becomes the yardstick for everything else. If a channel plays cleanly on the desktop and stutters on the television, the line and the source are both fine and the problem is downstream of them. That single comparison saves more support time than any other habit in this list.
Check the guide and the groups
Open the programme guide and a couple of regional groups while you are on a machine that makes browsing quick. A guide that looks shifted by a whole number of hours is the computer clock or its timezone rather than the data, and a group that is missing entirely is worth reporting before you start setting up other devices.
Worth knowing
- A desktop holds a large catalogue comfortably because it has the memory for it. Where a television player stalls for a minute, a laptop is ready in a couple of seconds.
- When credentials are in doubt, test them here first. A login that works on a laptop and fails on a television box has told you the line is fine and the box is not.
- Before buying dedicated hardware, run the laptop into the television over HDMI for a week. A fair number of households never get any further than that.
